It is a strange thing, to ask a Frenchman for his favourite English player because it is not so much a player that we loved, as as player that we feared. I grew up at a time when the feeling ahead of a clash between our nations was always that we were going to lose and that was often because of the presence of Bobby Charlton. The first World Cup I remember was 1966 and that famous goal against Mexico is one that is imprinted on my memory, and the memory of my school friends. We would try and mimic his technique when we played in the park. He represented something that our nation did not have; he represented winning. Don't forget we're talking about a guy who won the World Cup, the European Cup, who played with George Best. He was one of the greatest English footballers of all time.
